Kyle Cooper was 30 years old when his life ended Thursday night in the Hilltop area of west Columbus. Police say it started with a fight. Then he ended up in the street. A car hit him soon after.
Officers got the call just before 9:30 p.m. near Sullivant Avenue and Binns Boulevard. They found Kyle on the road after a vehicle struck him. Fire crews took him to the hospital right away. He died from his injuries later that night.
The man charged is 32-year-old Michon Minyard. Police say he kicked and stomped Kyle while Kyle was already down in the roadway. That left him right in the path of traffic. Minyard faces murder and felonious assault charges. He was arrested without any trouble.
The driver who hit Kyle stayed put. Police checked it out and said the driver had nothing to do with the earlier fight. No charges for the driver.
This all went down in a busy stretch of the West Side. Folks around there know those streets get traffic even late. Leaving someone out there like that does not leave much chance.
Kyle’s name is what people will remember from this. A regular night turned deadly fast. The case is with the Columbus Police Homicide Unit now. They want anyone who saw something to call in.
It is the kind of story that sticks because it shows how quick things can go wrong on a regular street. Kyle was gone before the night was over. Minyard sits with the charges while the investigation keeps moving.
