  • Joseph “Joey” DeSena, Raleigh NC: Child Exploitation; Children as Young as 7💔

Seven years old. That is the youngest age investigators put on the children in the 10 digital files at the center of a new case against Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, 44, of Raleigh. The oldest they estimate is 15.

DeSena was arrested Friday, October 23, in Wake County. He faces 10 felony counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. The warrants name November 19, 2025 as the date of the alleged offenses. The accusation is that he possessed those files and made copies of them.

He appeared in court Monday, October 26, and left without bond. He is being held at the Wake County Detention Center, 3301 Hammond Road in Raleigh. His next hearing on these charges is November 16.

He has not been convicted in this case. These are allegations. The part already settled is the one before it, and that one involved cameras inside somebody else’s home.

In October 2025, authorities say DeSena secretly placed cameras in a bedroom and a bathroom at a rental property in Corolla, North Carolina. The cameras were there to record a person who had not agreed to be recorded. He was arrested in December 2025 and charged with two counts of felony secret peeping.

On July 27, 2026, he pleaded guilty to both counts. The sentence was 60 months of probation. He was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and get a mental health assessment or evaluation. The recommendation was specific: a psychiatrist or psychologist who specializes in psychosexual treatment. Under the plea agreement, he was not required to register as a sex offender.

The new exploitation charges were filed while he was still serving that probation. A camera case in the fall. A guilty plea in the summer. A probation term running. Then 10 more counts, this time involving children estimated to be between 7 and 15.

Raleigh knew him differently in November 2024. That was the month he won two straight games of “Jeopardy!” and took home $44,698. He lost the third game, came back for the Champions Wildcard tournament, reached the semifinals, and was knocked out there.

Now his name comes with a jail address on Hammond Road, a bond denial, and a November court date. The quiz show money is old news. The files are not.

  • Maria Garcia, Raleigh NC: Teen Girlfriend Charged With Murder After Fatal Shooting💔

Maria Catalina Garcia was just twenty years old when her life ended on a Tuesday afternoon. She was in Raleigh, North Carolina, dealing with the messy reality of a young relationship. The police say she was shot and killed by the person she was supposed to be closest to. It is a sudden end for a woman who still had her whole life ahead of her.

The shooting went down around 3:10 p.m. in the 1100 block of Garner Road. This is a busy stretch in Wake County, right in the middle of the Raleigh metro area. Officers rushed to the scene after getting a call about a gunshot victim. They found Maria bleeding badly on the ground.

Paramedics loaded her into an ambulance and sped her to a local hospital. The medical team fought to save her, but her injuries were just too severe. She had suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds. The doctors could not pull her through, and police confirmed she died shortly after arriving at the emergency room.

Detectives quickly figured out that the shooter was not a random stranger. Maria and the suspect were actually dating. The 18-year-old girlfriend, Shaliah Nikole Battista, was the one who pulled the trigger. The fact that they were in a relationship when the bullets started flying adds a dark layer to an already tragic story.

Shaliah did not try to run away after the shooting. She just stayed right there at the scene on Garner Road. When the cops arrived, they took her into custody without any fuss. They slapped her with a murder charge on the spot. She is now sitting in a jail cell, facing the rest of her life behind bars for what she did to Maria.

It turns out there was some prior trouble involving Maria in the domestic violence arena. Court records show she got arrested back on August 21, 2026. She was hit with simple assault and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence charges. The police reports do not spell out the exact details of that old case or how it ended, but it shows a history of rough times.

Now, Shaliah is locked up tight. The judge denied her bond, meaning she gets no chance to walk free while the case moves forward. She is scheduled to stand in front of a Wake County judge on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, for her first court date. Meanwhile, the Raleigh Police Department is still digging into the exact events that led to Maria taking a bullet.

  • Colby Cooks, Atlanta, Georgia: 4-Year-Old Found Dead as Brother Caydan Is Seriously Injured💔

A family in Atlanta is struggling to understand how two young brothers ended up in a tragedy that left one child dead and the other seriously injured. Colby Cooks, 4, was found dead inside a southwest Atlanta home Monday evening. His brother, Caydan, was also seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The case has left relatives searching for answers as police investigate what happened to the children.

The boys’ cousin, Kierra Barnes, remembers them as happy little children who loved to play and smile. She said the brothers had lived with her before, and she still has videos showing them enjoying their time together. Those memories have become painful reminders of the boys’ lives before this heartbreaking discovery.

Barnes said the brothers adored their mother. She described them as loving children who brought happiness to the people around them. For relatives who knew the boys, the thought that they may have suffered harm is difficult to accept.

According to Barnes, family members had tried repeatedly to get the children away from Jasmaine Smoak, 32. Smoak is now facing charges in connection with Colby’s death. Barnes said relatives had concerns about the children’s situation, although the full details of those concerns have not been established publicly.

Speaking about the case, Barnes struggled to understand why anyone would hurt the boys. “I don’t even know what would possess Jasmaine to even hurt them in any type of way,” she said. Her words reflect the shock and confusion relatives are facing as they try to make sense of what happened.

Atlanta police found Colby inside a southwest Atlanta home Monday evening while responding to a welfare check. The discovery led to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities have also been looking into the injuries suffered by his brother.

Smoak, 32, has been charged in connection with Colby’s death. However, the charges are allegations, and the investigation must establish what happened inside the home. The available information does not fully explain how Colby died or what led to Caydan’s injuries.

For Barnes and the rest of the family, the case is about more than the police investigation. They are remembering two young brothers who once played, laughed and shared ordinary childhood moments. Now, one child is dead, and another is recovering from serious injuries.

The family’s account has raised painful questions about what the boys may have experienced before the incident. Investigators will need to establish the facts surrounding Colby’s death and Caydan’s injuries. Until more information becomes available, many details remain unclear.

  • Taylor, Canton, Georgia federal agents and local police dismantle high school mass shooting plot

Federal and local investigators moved fast last week after uncovering a terrifying plot targeting a metro Atlanta high school. Law enforcement agencies across state lines stepped in before any violence could unfold. Three individuals now face severe felony charges. The quick response stopped a potential tragedy in its tracks.

The whole ordeal kicked off when the FBI office in Atlanta flagged alarming social media posts. Those digital messages pointed directly toward Cherokee High School. Federal analysts quickly alerted the Cherokee County School District Police. School officers immediately brought in local detectives from the Canton Police Department to dig deeper.

Investigators did not waste a single moment. By October 20, just a day after getting the alert, detectives locked onto their first suspect. They arrested a juvenile from Canton. Court documents and police statements confirmed the minor was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Officials also slapped the teen with charges for disrupting public school operations.

Authorities kept the identity of that first juvenile strictly under wraps due to age laws. But the investigation widened rapidly. Digital breadcrumbs and electronic evidence pointed detectives hundreds of miles away. They soon identified two more co-conspirators operating outside the immediate area.

On October 23, the net closed tighter around the second suspect. Seventeen-year-old Shane Keith Taylor of Metter, Georgia, was tracked down in his hometown. Canton detectives, backed by federal agents and local sheriff deputies, placed him in handcuffs. Taylor was hauled straight to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center to face conspiracy charges.

Meanwhile, federal agents zeroed in on the third suspect out on the West Coast. Twenty-one-year-old Michael Brandon Terry was tracked down in Chatsworth, California. The FBI and Los Angeles police teamed up to execute that arrest. Terry now sits behind bars in California, waiting for extradition back to Georgia to face his day in court.

During the multi-state sweep, officers hauled in crucial physical evidence. Investigators collected multiple firearms, rounds of ammunition, and various electronic devices. Police have kept tight-lipped on exact locations where the weapons were found. They also have not revealed how the three suspects originally connected online.

School district leaders moved swiftly to calm worried parents and staff. Administrators held in-person briefings with teachers at Cherokee High School and a neighboring middle school. Extra police patrols now guard the campus. Counselors have stepped in to help students and staff process the heavy news.

Police chief Marty Ferrell stressed that community safety remains the absolute top priority. Authorities confirmed that all three suspects are locked up. Officials stated clearly that no ongoing threat remains to the school or the surrounding county. Anyone with lingering details is urged to contact local police or drop an anonymous tip with the FBI.

  • Mason Halterman, St. Leon, Indiana: High school baseball star fights to get better in ICU after weekend crash🙏

Mason Halterman is sitting in an intensive care unit in St. Leon, Indiana. The high school student got hurt bad in a crash this past weekend. His family is waiting for answers while he works to get better.

People in this small town know him best on the baseball diamond. He wears number 8 for the East Central Trojans. He plays outfield and pitches, and he is set to graduate in 2027.

Nobody knows exactly how the wreck happened. The details are kept quiet right now. All anyone knows is that the injuries are severe enough to keep him hooked up to machines in the ICU.

One of his teachers put a note online that really hit home. She talked about the morning chats they had every single day for four years. They would talk and she would give him a little pep talk before class.

She wrote that once you are her student, you are her kid forever. That is just how she feels about the boys and girls she teaches. Now she is watching one of them go through a terrible ordeal.

The road back is going to be long. The teacher made it clear that this is not a quick fix. The family needs all the love they can get while they sit by his hospital bed.

The whole Trojans baseball family is stepping up. Folks in St. Leon are sending prayers and checking in on the parents. They just want Mason to know his town is right behind him.

  • Sandy Stroud Death, Hesperia, California: Died in a Crash That Started at a Traffic Light💔

Sandy Stroud was 53 years old and lived in Hesperia, California. She died Sunday morning, October 25, 2026, in a crash involving several vehicles.

It happened shortly before 5 a.m. at the intersection of Ranchero Road and Cataba Road. The sun was not up yet, and that stretch of road had few people on it.

Early reports say a Hyundai Palisade SUV was stopped at a traffic light. A pickup truck came up behind it and hit it from the rear. Up to that point, it was a crash like thousands of others.

It did not stop there. The impact set off more collisions. A Buick Encore and a Hyundai sedan were pulled in, and what began as one hit turned into a pileup.

One person did not survive. That person was Stroud. Another person was flown by air ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

So far, nobody has said how that second person is doing. Nobody has said, either, why the pickup truck hit the SUV in the first place.

The California Highway Patrol’s Victorville Office is investigating. The reports so far are preliminary, and the findings could change what we know.

For now, the facts are few and the questions are many. Stroud’s family and friends are left to deal with a loss that came before sunrise on an ordinary Sunday. Hesperia lost one of its own.

  • Caleb Barber, Powell, Tennessee: Shot by Deputy at Gas Station After 911 Calls About Man With Gun💔

Caleb Barber was 31 when a Knox County deputy shot and killed him in a gas station parking lot on Sunday morning. It happened at the Weigel’s at 7505 Clinton Highway in Powell, Tennessee, on Oct. 25.

It started with phone calls. Shortly before 7:30 a.m., people dialed 911 and said a man with a gun was in the lot. They said he was acting erratically. Deputies with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office headed over.

One deputy walked up and made contact with Barber. That’s about all the public has been told about those moments. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says things got worse for reasons it’s still looking into. Then the deputy fired, and the shots hit Barber.

Barber was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were hurt.

The sheriff’s office spoke first. It said deputies had shot a person who was “acting erratically,” and it gave no name. The TBI later said the man who died was Barber. Around 8:15 a.m., the sheriff’s office also asked people to stay away from the area because of the heavy police presence.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office named the deputy as Riley Duncan. He joined the department in May 2025 and works in the Patrol Division. He’s on paid administrative leave, which the office says is standard after a shooting.

The TBI is running the investigation because 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen asked it to. Agents are collecting evidence and talking to people to piece together what happened. They’ll pass what they find to Allen. The TBI doesn’t decide whether the deputy was right to fire. Allen does.

The TBI hasn’t said what led to the shots. What Barber and the deputy said to each other, and what Barber was doing in those last seconds, hasn’t been made public. Our thoughts are with Barber’s family.

  • Shawn Rutherford Death, Biglick Township, Ohio: Biker Killed While Stopped at Intersection💔

Shawn Rutherford was sitting still on his Harley-Davidson, waiting on traffic, when a car slammed into him from behind. He was 44. He died on the road Sunday afternoon.

Rutherford, who lived in Findlay, was riding east on State Route 568 in Biglick Township, Hancock County, Ohio. It was about 4:35 p.m. on October 25, 2026. He came up to the intersection with State Route 330 and stopped.

Behind him was a Mercury Grand Marquis headed the same direction. Investigators said the car hit the back of his motorcycle.

Rutherford was pronounced dead right there at the scene.

The man driving the car was Mick Green, 37, of Findlay. It was a 2000 model. Two passengers were with him, Kaleb Bricely, 36, of Findlay, and Amanda Moore, 37, of Carey. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said none of the three was hurt.

Hanco EMS, Dick’s Towing and the Vanlue Volunteer Fire Department all helped at the scene.

The sheriff’s office is still looking into what happened. So far, it hasn’t said what led up to the crash. That part is still unanswered.

The spot is a rural stretch of Hancock County, just outside Findlay in northwestern Ohio. On Sunday, a man stopped his motorcycle at that corner and never rode away.

  • Vincent Fiordilino, Gilbert, Arizona: Toddler Declared Dead, Found Breathing Hours Later in Morgue💔

Vincent Fiordilino is home with his family. Nearly nine months ago, a doctor in Gilbert, Arizona, told his parents the 18-month-old was dead. He wasn’t. Vincent survived, but his mother and the family’s attorney say he now has a severe brain injury.

It began Feb. 8, Super Bowl Sunday. The family was hosting a party at their house. His mother, Alexus Fiordilino, walked out back and found Vincent floating face down in the swimming pool. His father, Angelo, started CPR while relatives called 911.

First responders rushed the boy to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. He arrived at the emergency room around 6:04 p.m. Hospital staff kept trying to bring him back. At 6:20 p.m., Dr. Aryan Toosi pronounced him dead after talking with his parents.

Alexus, 30, says the doctor told them Vincent’s blood pH was too far off for him to survive. She says they were told more treatment would not lead to a real recovery. She and her husband agreed to stop. They believed the doctors had done everything they could. “Infuriated. I feel like I was grossly misled,” she said in an interview published Oct. 23.

When the family hugged Vincent goodbye, some relatives wondered if he was still breathing. Alexus says hospital staff told them it was agonal breathing, the kind of gasping that can happen when someone is dying. Police records also noted apparent gasps after Vincent was pronounced dead.

Vincent was taken to a cold room at the hospital to wait for the medical examiner. More than five hours after he was declared dead, a transporter from the medical examiner’s office showed up. The transporter saw that the boy was still breathing. The family got a call, and Vincent was sent to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

“My husband and I just screamed in relief,” Alexus said. “We were praising the Lord. We were crying. To go from hearing he was gone and then finding out he isn’t gone, it’s an unexplainable feeling.”

Being alive did not mean being okay. Vincent is home now, but the family’s attorney, John Brewer, says he is severely brain-injured and will need care for the rest of his life. Alexus says her son is getting better, though the road is not simple.

The family is thinking about legal action against Dr. Toosi and Dignity Health, which runs Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. Toosi’s attorney, Scott Holden, said the doctor’s thoughts are with Vincent and his family and that he wishes the boy continued healing. Holden would not talk about the care itself, citing the pending legal matter and patient privacy laws. Dignity Health called the case “heartbreaking” and said patient safety is its top priority. It also declined to discuss details.

Questions have followed the family, too. Gilbert police recommended child abuse charges against Vincent’s parents. Police records say the parents admitted using marijuana earlier that day. In July, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office decided not to charge them, saying the evidence did not meet the standard needed for a conviction.

Police also passed information about the hospital’s handling of Vincent to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. That office had not decided whether to take it up. Police said their own investigation did not find probable cause for a crime by medical staff. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with expenses.

  • Nadine Jett, Valley Center, California: Foster Mom Lay Buried Behind Her Home While Family Was Told She Died in Mexico

Nadine Jett’s body sat in a hole behind her own house for more than a year. Her relatives were told she had died in Mexico. Prosecutors say that was a lie. Jett was a 65-year-old attorney who lived on a rural property in Valley Center, California, and they say her foster son killed her.

That foster son is Cedric Von Ferdinand, 34. He was arrested in Los Angeles County on Oct. 20, 2026, and charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors say he gave Jett a deadly dose of fentanyl so he could take over her estate. They also say he then used her name to get money and property.

Jett learned she had cancer in August 2023. When she found out she needed chemotherapy, Von Ferdinand offered to move back into her home. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan says he wasn’t there to help. Prosecutors say it was a way to get his hands on her finances.

Jett was last seen alive on Jan. 14, 2024, after a chemo appointment. Investigators believe she was killed between that day and Jan. 17. Three days after she was last seen, prosecutors say, Von Ferdinand told her caretaker that Jett had died and the caretaker was no longer needed. He also canceled her upcoming medical appointments. Other relatives heard she had gone to Mexico and died there.

Her loved ones didn’t buy it. They couldn’t get a death certificate. In June 2024, several of her foster children reported her missing. They also told authorities about strange real estate deals involving her properties.

On July 16, 2025, sheriff’s detectives searched Jett’s land on Oak Creek Road. About 30 yards from her house, they found human remains in a hole. The body was partially mummified and wrapped in a bedsheet. Investigators learned someone had been asked to dig a hole about six feet by six feet around the time she disappeared. An autopsy found she died of acute fentanyl toxicity, and her death was ruled a homicide. Stephan said testing showed a massive amount of acetylfentanyl, a substance tied to illegally made fentanyl.

Jett’s foster daughters, including sisters Tiffany Lucci and Bianca Lucci, came to the news conference where the charge was announced. Stephan called the case a betrayal of a woman who took in a child in need. “She was that mom we needed,” Bianca Lucci said. “She gave us a fair chance at life.”

The murder charge carries special-circumstance allegations that Jett was killed for money and by poison. Von Ferdinand already faced felony charges for grand theft, identity theft, forgery and filing false documents. Prosecutors say the losses topped $500,000. His arraignment was delayed, and a new court date is set for Nov. 5. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
