Cameron Witham was 19. Audrey Witham was 18. Both died Thursday evening in a car crash in Cherokee County, Kansas.

It happened around 5:45 p.m. on Southeast 110th Street, about three miles north of Galena. Cameron, of Webb City, was driving a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis north. Audrey, of Joplin, was in the car with him.

Investigators say the car hit the right side of the Spring River bridge. The hit sent it skidding. The car then veered off the left side of the road and slammed into a tree.

Cameron and Audrey both died in the crash. Investigators say both were wearing seat belts. It’s not clear from the report what led to the crash.

They were just starting out. A 19-year-old and an 18-year-old, with most of their lives still ahead. Their families, friends and everyone who knew them are now dealing with a loss they didn’t see coming.

The crash happened on a rural stretch of road, right where it crosses the Spring River. The tree the car hit sits just off the left side of the road.

Two families got the worst kind of news Thursday night. Two young people from Webb City and Joplin are gone, and the people who loved them are left with a lot of questions and a lot of memories.
