A quiet Friday evening in Scottsbluff turned deadly when a pickup truck hit a man walking in a marked crosswalk. Brody Gustafson, 19, drove the 1991 Nissan south on Broadway toward 23rd Street. It was about 9:25 p.m. on October 9.
Police arrived to find the pedestrian on the ground in the southbound lanes. The truck had stopped nearby. The injured man went straight to Regional West Medical Center. He died from his injuries later that night.
Early findings show the man was inside the crosswalk when the truck hit him. Officers shut down Broadway for roughly four hours. They measured, photographed, and pieced the crash together.
Speed and distracted driving are both under review. Charges wait on the full investigation. No decisions have been made public yet.
Help came from the county sheriff’s office, local firefighters, and the ambulance team. The pedestrian’s identity remains held back until relatives get word.
