Brody Gustafson was behind the wheel of an old Nissan pickup Friday night when things went wrong at a busy Scottsbluff intersection. The 19-year-old drove south on Broadway near 23rd Street around 9:25 p.m. Police got the call right away about a vehicle hitting a man on foot.

Officers found the man lying in the southbound lanes. The pickup sat just south of him. Medics rushed the pedestrian to Regional West Medical Center. He did not make it.

The man had been crossing Broadway in the crosswalk, according to early reports. Gustafson’s 1991 Nissan struck him as it headed toward the intersection. Broadway stayed closed for about four hours. Crews worked the scene and rebuilt what happened.

Police are looking at speed and possible distraction. No charges yet. The case is still open. Scotts Bluff County deputies, the fire department, and ambulance crews all helped out.

The man’s name stays private for now. Family still needs to be told. Anyone who saw something can call Scottsbluff police at (308) 632-7176 or Crime Stoppers at (308) 436-HELP.

Scottsbluff sits out in the Nebraska Panhandle close to Wyoming. Nights like this leave a mark on a small city. Folks here know these streets well.

Investigators keep digging. More details will come as they sort through the facts.
