A vehicle traveling southbound on East University Avenue struck Cody Sanson, 37, of New Market, Iowa, around 7 p.m. Saturday in Lafayette. The crash took place in the 900 block where lights were dim and no crosswalk marked the way.

Investigators found Cody looked down at his phone while he stepped into the street. That moment put him directly in the car’s path. Severe injuries followed at once.

Emergency teams rushed him by ambulance to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead soon after arrival. Police ruled out any impairment by the driver from the start.

The force of the collision shut down East University Avenue from Harding Street to Coolidge Street. Patrol officers and traffic units stayed on scene for hours. The stretch opened back up once work finished.

  • Collins Tuscaloosa Alabama: Charged in Partner’s Death After Botched Robbery Shootout

Collins Tuscaloosa Alabama: Charged in Partner’s Death After Botched Robbery Shootout

Daronte Collins walked away from Magnolia Apartments on Saturday night while his partner did not. The 20-year-old from Oxford now faces a stack of charges after the two tried to rob a 25-year-old Tuscaloosa man and gunfire broke out.

Police rolled up around 7:30 p.m. October 10 after word came that a shooting victim was on the way to DCH Regional Medical Center from the 1000 block of Investigator Dornell Cousette Street. The real scene sat in the parking lot at 5621 Highway 69 South.

Collins and Kurtae’vious Earl Tyson, both 20 from Oxford, made their move on the man. Shots flew. Tyson went down critical and later died from the injuries.

Collins caught charges of felony murder, first-degree robbery, attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Under Alabama rules a death during a robbery can bring the felony murder count even when the accused is not the one who fired the fatal shot.

No word yet on whether the 25-year-old man got hurt. Police also have not said who put the bullet in Tyson.

Collins is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. He is the one still answering for what happened in that lot.

Magnolia Apartments sits on Highway 69 South in Tuscaloosa, a west-central Alabama city near the Black Warrior River and roughly 60 miles from Birmingham. The case stays open while detectives sort the rest.

Tyson and Collins, both 20 and both from Oxford, tried to take what the other man had. The exchange of gunfire happened right there between the cars. No one has said yet if the 25-year-old took any hits.

Collins faces felony murder, first-degree robbery, attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Alabama law lets them charge felony murder when a death happens during a robbery, even if the person charged did not pull the trigger that killed his partner.

  • Lora Roberts Erie Pennsylvania: Mother Trying to Save Family Gunned Down Outside Perry Street House

Lora Roberts Erie Pennsylvania: Mother Trying to Save Family Gunned Down Outside Perry Street House

Lora Roberts stepped outside that house on Perry Street to get somebody safe. She ended up dead in the street instead. Two women down before police even got there. Erie, Pennsylvania, lost nine people that Friday.

Around 5 p.m. on October 9, 2026, the calls came in about shots. Officers found Lora and another woman already gone. Inside the residence it was worse. Angelina Stone, 24 and pregnant with baby Kyrie, was dead. Her boy Isiah, five years old, and little Amari’anna, almost two, were dead too.

Jonathan Stone and Matthew Stone, the brothers, were found with the others. The man who did the shooting was dead from his own gun. Police had tried to get him to come out peaceful. He did not.

Chief Rick Lorah walked through the rooms and said it was the worst thing he had seen in almost thirty years on the job. Mayor Daria Devlin told the town the families had the city’s full support. Eight of the dead were family. One was a close friend.

Lora had five kids of her own. She used to help run a group that looked after people without homes. That night she was just trying to pull one more person out of trouble. It cost her everything.

The kids never got another birthday. The unborn boy never got a name day. The brothers never got another chance to sit around and talk about old times. The street is quiet now except for the memorial stuff people keep leaving.

Detectives are still digging into the why. Some talk about mental health. Some say it was all family trouble that boiled over. No final answers yet. Just nine people who will not come home
