Hunter Smith sat in the Troup County Jail Tuesday night after deputies grabbed him at a Sims Road house. The 21-year-old faces questions over the shooting that killed a 16-year-old.
It started with a 911 call around 7 p.m. Someone reported a person with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle on Bass Cross Road. Deputies rolled up at 7:03 p.m. and found Paul Smith of LaGrange unresponsive.

Medics worked on him hard. They took him to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. Paul died later from the wounds. Detectives learned the shots rang out at the Sims Road residence earlier.
Another person had driven Paul away from that house and made the emergency call. That detail pointed investigators back to Sims Road. They found Hunter there.
The arrest went smooth just before 10 p.m. No struggle. He was hauled to the jail while the probe kept going. Authorities have stayed quiet on any motive or how Hunter and Paul were connected.
Troup County Sheriff’s Office detectives are still lining up the full story. They confirmed the shooting spot and the drive to Bass Cross Road. Nothing more has come out yet about charges or what led up to the gunfire.
The community around LaGrange and Troup County waits for more answers as the investigation rolls on.
