A violent disturbance outside a rural home on the Navajo Nation ended in tragedy when a man was fatally shot inside a pickup truck following a chaotic dispute over vehicle keys.
Federal prosecutors charged 39-year-old Letisha Begay with second-degree murder after tribal police and FBI agents investigated the October 4 incident in Shiprock, New Mexico.
According to federal court filings, the victim had spent the afternoon drinking before returning to Begay’s home on foot to retrieve his parked motorcycle.
Begay told investigators she rushed home from another location after receiving an urgent phone call from her distressed daughter warning her about the man’s presence.
When Begay arrived at the house, she found the man sitting in her personal pickup truck and taking her vehicle keys from the ignition.
Witnesses living nearby reported hearing a loud gunshot ring out across the yard before seeing the truck jerk backward and strike another vehicle parked in the driveway.
Neighbors rushed to the scene and found the man slumped unconscious behind the steering wheel with a gunshot wound to his chest, while the driver’s side window lay shattered with a bullet hole through the glass.
Begay approached the wrecked truck and initially told a bystander that the man had shot himself, stepping in to press a cloth against his chest to stop the bleeding while neighbors called 911.
Navajo Nation Police officers arrived on the scene and performed emergency CPR, but the victim died from his injuries before paramedics could transport him to a hospital.
During questioning by federal agents, Begay admitted to firing the gun but told officers she never intended to kill the man, leading investigators inside her home to retrieve the pistol used in the shooting.
