Emergency crews in Harrison County spent Tuesday morning investigating a fatal collision involving a freight train and a local cyclist.
The incident unfolded at roughly 8:00 a.m. when a cyclist tried to pedal across the tracks ahead of an oncoming train near Eisenhower Drive.
Engineers operating the freight train were unable to bring the heavy cars to a stop before striking the bicyclist on the tracks.
Biloxi police officers and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene but confirmed the rider passed away from his injuries immediately.
Traffic ground to a halt along nearby thoroughfares as law enforcement officers shut down access to the railroad crossing.
Investigators spent nearly two hours inspecting the locomotive, mapping the impact site, and documenting physical evidence left along the rails.
Police officers managed to clear the scene and restore full traffic operations before 10:00 a.m., minimizing further delays for morning drivers.
The Biloxi Police Department is withholding the victim’s identity pending official identification by the coroner and family notification.
Local authorities continue urging cyclists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution and obey all active warning signals at railway crossings.
