A 37-year-old driver is facing multiple charges following a fiery four-vehicle crash that killed Rebecca Case, a mother of nine, on Highway 385 in Collierville, Tennessee. The deadly collision happened around 5:12 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, near the Progress Road overpass. What began as an ordinary drive home from work ended in tragedy for Rebecca and her family.

Collierville police identified the driver as Derek Kyle Johnson, who allegedly slammed into the back of Rebecca’s Honda CR-V while it was stopped in traffic inside an active construction zone. The force of the collision pushed her SUV forward and set off a chain reaction involving three other vehicles.

When emergency crews reached the scene, Rebecca’s Honda CR-V was completely engulfed in flames. She was trapped inside and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person suffered minor injuries, while a third person involved in the crash escaped without injury.

Investigators later reported finding several alcoholic drinks inside Johnson’s vehicle. These included five cans of hard cider, two canned screwdriver cocktails measuring 16 and 24 ounces, and another unidentified 30-ounce container that smelled strongly of alcohol. Officers also reported finding another can of cider in the cup holder that was still cold to the touch.

Police said Johnson showed signs of possible intoxication when officers arrived. They reported noticing a strong smell of alcohol on him, along with bloodshot and watery eyes. After conducting a field sobriety test, officers took him to a hospital for a blood draw.

The investigation also uncovered previous legal problems involving Johnson. Authorities said he had an outstanding failure-to-appear charge in Bartlett, Tennessee, and was driving with a suspended license connected to an earlier failure-to-appear charge in Murfreesboro.

Records from Howell County, Missouri, also showed that Johnson was facing separate DWI and driving-on-a-suspended-license charges from an incident in late September. In that case, he had reportedly been clocked driving 86 mph in a 55 mph zone. The arresting officer said Johnson smelled of alcohol, and he admitted he had been drinking. When asked during field sobriety testing whether he thought he was over the legal limit, Johnson reportedly answered, “Possibly.”

Johnson had been scheduled to appear in a Missouri court just two days before the fatal Collierville crash. Following the October 28 collision, he was charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, an open container violation and a seat belt violation. He was later held on a $250,000 bond.

Beyond the criminal investigation, Rebecca’s death has left a family struggling to adjust to life without her. She was the wife of Matt Case and the mother of nine children, ages 4 to 18. She homeschooled the children and also spent time helping young women and new mothers in her community.

Family friend Matthew Nowlin said the family’s church and homeschooling community had stepped in to help with food, laundry and other daily needs. He also organized a fundraising campaign to assist Matt with funeral expenses, household necessities and the long-term needs of the children.

For the Case family, the loss goes far beyond the circumstances of the crash. Matt must now raise nine children without the woman who shared that responsibility with him. While the investigation continues, those who knew Rebecca are remembering her devotion to her family and the faith she passed on to her children.
