A Ford Escape entering an intersection without yielding to an approaching motorcycle led to a chain-reaction crash that claimed the life of 19-year-old Dongjun Kim in South Texas. The Tuesday morning collision involved four vehicles and left four other people hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on November 3, 2026, at the intersection of 10th and Chapin streets north of Edinburg. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Kim was traveling northbound on a Yamaha motorcycle when a Ford Escape entered the intersection and failed to yield the right of way.
The motorcycle and Ford collided, setting off a series of impacts involving two additional vehicles. The Ford Escape struck a GMC Canyon pickup truck that was stopped at the intersection. The force of that collision sent the GMC into a Cadillac XT5 SUV.
What began as a collision between a motorcycle and an SUV quickly turned into a four-vehicle wreck. Emergency crews responded as those involved were assessed and taken for medical treatment.
Kim, a 19-year-old Edinburg resident, was wearing a helmet, protective jacket and gloves at the time. Despite the protective equipment, he suffered fatal injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Four other occupants of the Ford Escape and GMC Canyon were also taken to hospitals. Authorities described their injuries as non-life-threatening. No additional information about their identities or medical conditions was immediately released.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing. Its preliminary findings point to the Ford Escape driver’s failure to yield as the event that led to the initial collision. Authorities have not released any further conclusions about the crash.
The incident has left a young life cut short at just 19. Kim was still in the early years of adulthood, with much of his future ahead of him. For his loved ones, the loss goes far beyond the details of a traffic investigation.
Four vehicles were caught up in the collision, but the most devastating outcome was the death of a young motorcyclist who never made it to his destination. As investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances, Dongjun Kim’s family is left to deal with a loss that no investigation can undo.
