A sleek McLaren 720S Spider ended up on its roof early Thursday after a high-speed run on Friant Road. Keerat Riar, 25, from Clovis, was driving the convertible north near Belcher Street. The clock read about 12:10 a.m.

He hit the median hard. The car lost control, rolled, and came to rest upside down. Riar did not survive. Officers called him dead at the scene.

The passenger, a 68-year-old man also tied to Clovis, suffered serious injuries. He remained awake as medics loaded him for Community Regional Medical Center.

Highway patrol pointed to speed as the main factor. No alcohol or drugs showed up in the early checks. The car itself was not even registered.

Friant Road sees its share of traffic, but this stretch turned deadly in seconds. The McLaren’s power met the median, and the result was final for the driver.

Crews cleared the wreck and reopened the road later. Questions linger about how fast the sports car was moving before the loss of control.

Riar’s death marks another reminder of what happens when speed takes over on local roads. The injured passenger’s recovery remains the focus now for those closest to the crash.
