A car crash on a country road in Cherokee County, Kansas, killed two young people Thursday evening. Audrey Witham, 18, of Joplin, and Cameron Witham, 19, of Webb City, both died.

Here is what investigators say happened. Around 5:45 p.m., Cameron was driving a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis north on Southeast 110th Street. The road is about three miles north of Galena.

The car struck the right side of the Spring River bridge. It skidded, then veered off the left side of the road and hit a tree.

Cameron and Audrey did not survive. Investigators say both were wearing their seat belts when the car hit the tree. The report doesn’t say what caused the crash.

Those who knew them are now left with a loss that came without warning. Cameron was 19. Audrey was 18. They were young adults at the start of their lives.

For their families and friends, the days ahead will be hard. Audrey was from Joplin, and Cameron was from Webb City. Both towns are now grieving two of their own.

A tree and a bridge on Southeast 110th Street now mark where it happened. For two families, it’s a place they never expected to know.
