Traffic safety officials in Athens-Clarke County are investigating a deadly chain of events that claimed a driver’s life early Monday morning. Just before sunrise on September 21, 2026, a two-part accident turned fatal along the 600 block of Old Hull Road.
It started around 5:55 a.m. when thirty-year-old Brayan Castro lost control while heading east. His black Nissan Frontier drifted across the center line, went off the left shoulder, and slammed directly into a drainage ditch.

Surviving the initial ditch crash, Castro climbed out of his truck. But instead of staying off the road, he walked into the active travel lane. In the dim morning light, any oncoming driver had almost no time to react.
A driver heading west in a white GMC Sierra hit Castro in the middle of the road. Passersby and nearby residents dialed 911 right away, sending police cars and medical crews rushing to the scene.
Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but they could not save Castro. Officers pronounced the thirty-year-old dead on the spot. The driver of the GMC stayed at the scene and cooperated as crash investigators took control of the area.
The collision brings the total traffic death toll in Athens-Clarke County to ten for the year 2026. Local authorities say the incident shows how fast a simple breakdown or single-car crash can turn fatal on dark rural roads.
Police accident reconstruction teams spent hours documenting the scene on Old Hull Road to figure out what caused Castro to cross the center line initially. Investigators are still working the case to get final answers for the victim’s family and the town.
