State troopers are investigating why a driver crossed into oncoming traffic Tuesday, causing a deadly head-on collision on State Route 7 in Monroe County. The crash happened near mile post 21 in Salem Township.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Brady Dye of Lowell was driving north in a 2002 Subaru Outback. For reasons still under review, Dye’s vehicle crossed left of center into the southbound lane.

Duff Mahoney, 54, of Clarington, was traveling south in a 2007 Ford Focus when Dye’s car drifted into his path. Mahoney had no space to avoid the incoming vehicle before the two cars crashed head-on.

The impact killed Mahoney at the scene. His Ford Focus came to rest off the right side of the road, while Dye’s Subaru remained sitting in the middle of the roadway.

Both Dye and Mahoney were wearing seat belts when the collision occurred. Emergency workers arrived shortly after callers reported the heavy two-vehicle crash.

Responders from Monroe County Fire and EMS, Clarington EMS, Sardis Fire, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office shut down the section of State Route 7 to handle the scene.

Braden’s Towing removed both damaged vehicles as state troopers, the Monroe County Coroner’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation worked to document the crash site.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to gather evidence to determine what led to the northbound vehicle crossing the line. No official cause has been listed as the investigation stays open.
