Nicholas David Edwards was only 29 years old when his life ended on a busy stretch of road in Mingo County. He was a local guy from Delbarton, West Virginia, a small town where folks know their neighbors by name. On Monday, September 14, 2026, he went out like any other day, but he never made it back home.

The crash happened right at the intersection where Duncan Fork Road meets U.S. Route 119. It involved two vehicles, though state troopers have not yet explained how the cars hit each other. The impact was severe enough to leave Nicholas gravely injured right in the middle of the roadway.

First responders from STAT EMS rushed to the scene shortly after the call came in. Paramedics loaded Nicholas into an ambulance and drove him across the state line to Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky. Emergency doctors and nurses went straight to work trying to stabilize him.

Despite everything the medical team did, Nicholas could not be saved. Doctors pronounced him dead at the hospital later that day. News of his death moved fast through the small community, leaving relatives and lifelong friends in total shock over how quickly a normal afternoon turned into a nightmare.

Because the hospital sits in Kentucky, local officials handed off part of the process to neighboring authorities. The Pike County Coroner stepped in and arranged for Nicholas to be taken to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort, where doctors will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Back in Mingo County, state troopers notified his next of kin about the tragic outcome. Friends and neighbors in Delbarton have spent the past day gathering to support his family, trying to process how a young man with decades ahead of him was taken away in an instant.

West Virginia State Police are leading the investigation to figure out what went wrong on the highway. Deputies with the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office are helping gather evidence at the intersection, but right now, the family is left waiting for answers while they grieve a loss that came far too soon.
