Ryan J. Evans was forty-four years old and lived in Brocton, New York. On Saturday morning, September 12, he was driving north along Burdick Road in the Town of Chautauqua. Around 7:26 a.m., his vehicle went off the road and struck a tree.

People in small towns across Chautauqua County know how fast a normal weekend morning can turn upside down. Ryan was making his way through Dewittville, a quiet hamlet where neighbors know each other and traffic is usually light. The sun was barely up when the crash happened.

Ryan was a Brocton local with deep ties to his community. At forty-four, he was right in the middle of his life, with everyday routines, family responsibilities, and plans for the weekend ahead. His sudden death caught everyone who knew him off guard.

Deputies from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office were the first to respond to the scene. Investigators determined that Ryan’s truck was traveling northbound on Burdick Road between Elm Flat Road and Haight Road. Without warning, the truck veered off the right shoulder.

The vehicle went down an embankment and slammed into a tree along the tree line. First responders from the North Lake Fire Department and Chautauqua County EMS arrived minutes later to try to help. Ryan suffered severe injuries in the impact and died at the scene.

News of the crash spread quickly back to Brocton over the weekend. Friends and family members spent Sunday talking about Ryan, remembering simple moments like working in the yard or catching up at the local shop. Losing someone so young hits a small town hard.

Sheriff’s deputies are still trying to figure out why the truck left the road. There were no other passengers in the vehicle, and no other cars were involved. For Ryan’s family in Brocton, the shock remains as they figure out how to move forward without him.
