Seventeen-year-old Zer’Real Hinds was looking forward to a year full of big milestone celebrations. The Belleville West High School senior was getting ready to walk his mother down the aisle at her wedding next month in October. He was also preparing to graduate high school in May before enlisting in the United States Air Force.
All those bright plans came to a sudden, devastating end on Wednesday morning around 8:20 a.m. Hinds was riding to school inside a contracted student transportation van traveling along Highway 15. Near the intersection at Pocket Road in Cahokia Heights, the vehicle slammed into a traffic light pole and quickly burst into flames.
Inside the van were six minors and two adults, including Hinds’ younger sister, who is a junior at Belleville West. As fire spread through the vehicle, the terrified sister desperately tried to pull her brother from the burning wreckage. Despite her courageous efforts, she could not free him before emergency responders arrived.
Heroic bystanders and local firefighters rushed into the intense heat to pull the remaining occupants to safety. Several citizens suffered burns and minor injuries of their own while rescuing the children from the vehicle. Hinds’ sister was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for treatment and emotional support following the traumatic ordeal.
Hinds’ heartbroken family gathered at the crash site later that afternoon to mourn the loss of the beloved teenager. His godmother, Chanty Clay, spoke through tears as she remembered a polite young man who always jumped at the chance to help others. She described him as a stylish, loving kid with striking eyes who proudly called her his god-mommy.
Clay shared that Hinds was determined to follow in her footsteps by serving his country in the Air Force after graduation. She expressed deep pride in his character and swore to honor his memory by making sure his legacy lives on. She urged the community to keep his sister and the surviving passengers in their thoughts and prayers as they recover.
Belleville Township High School District 201 Superintendent Dr. Marshaun Warren visited the crash scene Wednesday morning to express condolences to the grieving family. District officials confirmed the van was operated by a contracted transit service that handles student routes. Illinois State Police troopers are working alongside local officers to investigate what caused the fatal morning wreck.
