A morning school turned into a chaotic emergency scene along Highway 15 in Cahokia Heights on Wednesday. At roughly 8:20 a.m., a student transportation van carrying eight people veered off the road and collided directly with a traffic light pole near Pocket Road.

The heavy impact shattered the front of the van, and flames erupted from the engine compartment almost immediately. Six minors and two adults were trapped inside the vehicle as smoke filled the cabin, triggering a frantic rescue effort by passing drivers and nearby residents.

Bystanders rushed toward the burning van without hesitation, working alongside arriving police officers to pull passengers through windows and doors. Several citizens suffered burns and minor physical injuries while dragging children away from the advancing fire. Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas Trice praised the brave actions of the citizens, stating their quick response undoubtedly saved lives.

Seventeen-year-old Belleville West High School senior Zer’Real Hinds tragically died at the scene from the crash and resulting fire. His younger sister, a junior at the same high school, fought frantically alongside rescuers to pull her brother out before being rushed to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for medical care.

Firefighters arrived within minutes to extinguish the blaze and provide emergency medical aid to the remaining crash victims. Authorities confirmed that the other seven passengers inside the van survived the wreck and are expected to recover from their injuries.

Belleville Township High School District 201 Superintendent Dr. Marshaun Warren responded to the accident site on Wednesday morning. District leadership noted that student transit services are managed through contracted vendors, though officials did not publicly identify the specific company operating the vehicle involved.

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene and Crash Reconstruction units have joined Cahokia Heights detectives to investigate the incident. Officers are reviewing roadway evidence, vehicle mechanical systems, and witness statements to determine exactly why the van left the roadway.
