A 59-year-old woman took the life of her disabled husband before taking her own inside their Pembroke Pines home on Monday morning. Emergency crews arrived at the house on Pine Drive shortly after 7 a.m. following a call about two unresponsive individuals.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies identified the deceased couple as Joanne Baker and her husband, retired police sergeant John Baker. Investigators quickly determined that Joanne shot her husband inside the home and then killed herself.

The tragedy came just weeks after the couple marked their 40th wedding anniversary. For years, Joanne had served as the primary caregiver for her husband following a life-altering accident during his police service.

John suffered severe brain and physical trauma in 2019 when an automobile turned into his police motorcycle. The crash stripped the veteran sergeant of his speech and mobility, turning Joanne into his full-time advocate and daily nurse.

Joanne documented their long daily struggle online through a Facebook group called “John’s Prayer Army” and a GoFundMe campaign. She shared the immense emotional toll of caregiving, noting that her husband often apologized to her for the accident that changed their lives.

In her online posts, Joanne described reassuring her husband that the crash was not his fault while acknowledging the heavy burden on their household. She wrote about managing care aides, medical routines, and the endless work required to keep him comfortable.

Detectives have not released an official motive for why Joanne pulled the trigger after decades of marriage. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies as state homicide detectives continue to process evidence from the scene.
