Police detectives in New York City are piecing together the final moments before two 24-year-olds were struck and killed by a train early Sunday morning. Navam Kaul and Malaika Chitre were hit by a southbound Number 4 train around 3:15 a.m. in Lower Manhattan. What brought the two young professionals onto the active track bed remains the central question of the ongoing inquiry.

Surveillance footage and bystander video captured the pair sitting together on the tracks shortly before the train pulled into the station. The train operator reported seeing the man and woman on the tracks as the train approached, noting that the woman appeared to be pulling the man toward her just moments before impact. Emergency braking was applied, but the train could not stop in time.

Transit reports suggest that one of the individuals may have initially fallen or stepped down onto the tracks, prompting the second person to follow in an effort to render aid. However, authorities have not yet confirmed how either person ended up off the platform in the first place.

Investigators are reviewing toxicology reports to determine if alcohol or drugs played a factor in reducing their awareness of the incoming train. Officers searched the area for any sign of a suicide note, but none was found, and officials have not drawn any final conclusions about the cause of the incident.

The train carrying roughly 100 passengers was brought to a halt, and emergency personnel evacuated the riders onto the station platform. Responders declared both Kaul and Chitre dead at the scene shortly after arriving.

Data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority shows that track strikes remain a persistent hazard across the city’s vast transit network. Over two hundred track impact incidents occur annually across New York City subway stations, with dozens resulting in fatal injuries every year.

Detectives continue to analyze station security footage and interview potential witnesses who were on the platform during the early morning hours. Until official findings are released, police are asking anyone with additional information or video from the platform to step forward.
