Two tight-knit college friends with bright futures ahead of them died early Sunday morning after getting struck by a subway train in Lower Manhattan. Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul, both 24 years old, were pronounced dead at the platform after emergency crews reached the scene. The sudden loss has left their families, former classmates, and mutual friends in complete disbelief.
Chitre and Kaul grew up in New Jersey and shared deep ties within their local South Asian community. They both attended Rutgers University, graduating together in 2024 before starting promising careers in the tri-state area. Friends described them as energetic, hardworking young adults who were deeply involved in campus life and community service.

After earning her degree, Chitre moved into a role as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals in Princeton. She had also recently enrolled in a doctorate of pharmacy program at Temple University in Philadelphia. During her undergraduate years, she spent time organizing charity work and managing service events for her sorority.
Kaul lived in Sayreville and worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg in New York City. His family had immigrated to the United States from Nepal three decades ago, building a life centered on education and community ties. Acquaintances recalled Kaul as a grounded, smart young man who excelled academically and stayed close with his family.
The pair remained close after college, frequently gathering with the same group of mutual friends to celebrate holidays and milestones. Family friends mentioned that both young adults had settled into solid professional tracks, making the sudden tragedy all the more difficult for their parents and peers to process.
Loved ones have spent the days following the incident gathering to share memories and comfort one another. Tributes have poured in across social media from college friends, former co-workers, and neighbors who remembered the two for their warm personalities and strong work ethic.
As their families prepare to lay them to rest, the community continues to mourn two young lives cut short far too soon. The loss remains a heavy burden for everyone who knew Chitre and Kaul, leaving a hole in the tight-knit circle they built together over the years.
