A routine firearms training session ended with an unexpected trip to the hospital for Hollywood filmmaker Michael Mann after a weapon accidentally discharged and struck him in the leg at a Los Angeles shooting range.
The 83-year-old director was at The Range LA in West Los Angeles on Saturday, October 31, when the incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. According to reports, Mann was attempting to put his firearm back into its holster when it unexpectedly went off.

The discharge left Mann with a gunshot injury to his leg. Emergency responders were called, and officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived alongside Los Angeles Fire Department personnel to investigate reports of a shooting at the facility.
Police later confirmed that the incident was accidental. According to the department, the victim had no intention of harming himself and was injured during a training accident after accidentally discharging the firearm into his own leg.
Mann was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. At the time of the police response, he was reported to be in stable condition. His representative subsequently confirmed that the injury was superficial and that he had received medical attention.
A statement from Mann’s representative explained that the weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, causing the injury. The representative also confirmed that the filmmaker was treated and was being released from the hospital.
Mann’s name is closely associated with some of Hollywood’s most recognized crime films. He directed Heat, the 1995 crime thriller featuring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, which became one of his most celebrated productions. His other directing credits include Thief, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Collateral and Public Enemies.
Beyond the big screen, Mann helped shape the popular television series Miami Vice, serving as its executive producer during its original run from 1984 to 1990. He later returned to the story as director of the 2006 movie adaptation.
His latest feature film, Ferrari, was released in 2023. Mann has also received major industry recognition throughout his career, including two Emmy Awards and a BAFTA Award, alongside several Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Saturday’s accident brought an unexpected medical emergency to an otherwise ordinary training session. However, the update from his representative indicated that Mann’s injury was superficial, and he had received treatment before being released from the hospital.
