Deep Purple fans were left concerned Saturday after legendary frontman Ian Gillan, 81, was hospitalized following a medical emergency that forced the British rock band to postpone two scheduled concerts in Germany. The announcement came just hours before the group was expected to take the stage in Leipzig, leaving fans who had already made plans for the show with little time to adjust.

The band confirmed the news on Saturday, October 31, announcing that it would not perform at the QI Arena in Leipzig that evening or at the Sporthalle in Hamburg on Sunday, November 1. Both performances were part of its ongoing European tour, and the sudden announcement caught many concertgoers off guard.

In a statement shared on social media, Deep Purple said Gillan’s medical emergency had resulted in his hospitalization. The group did not explain what happened, identify the medical problem or provide details about his current condition. It also did not say how long he might remain in the hospital.

The band apologized for the short notice and acknowledged the disappointment among fans who had been looking forward to seeing them perform. It also confirmed that efforts were underway to find replacement dates for both concerts.

Fans who already purchased tickets will not lose their money, according to the band’s announcement. All previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled performances. However, Deep Purple has yet to announce when the Leipzig and Hamburg shows will take place.

The postponements come as the group continues its European tour in support of its latest studio album, “Splat!” The band’s published schedule lists its next performance for November 3 at Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany. As of Saturday, the group had not announced any changes to that concert or its other upcoming appearances.

Gillan has been one of the most recognizable voices in rock music for decades. He joined Deep Purple in 1969 and helped produce some of the band’s best-known recordings, including “Smoke on the Water” and “Highway Star.” His powerful vocals became a major part of the group’s identity during its rise to international fame.

His time with the band has included several departures and returns. Gillan left in 1973, returned in 1984, departed again in 1989 and rejoined in 1992. He has remained the band’s lead singer since that return.

The current lineup also features guitarist Simon McBride, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice and keyboardist Don Airey. Together, they have continued taking Deep Purple’s music to audiences around the world.

For now, the immediate concern remains Gillan’s health. The band has not released further medical information or confirmed whether the emergency will affect additional tour dates. Fans are waiting for an update on the singer’s condition and news about the replacement concerts.
