Katherine Rebecca Worthen, 80, of Solomon, Kansas, lost her life Wednesday evening in a crash that unfolded as she walked to collect her mail along Solomon Road. The Kansas Highway Patrol said the collision happened just before 8 p.m. near Solomon Road and 2700 Avenue in Dickinson County, north of Interstate 70.
Investigators reported that Worthen had parked her 2024 Nissan in the northbound lane, facing south, before stepping out to reach the roadside mailbox. At that moment, a northbound 2013 Honda Civic driven by Andrea D. Macoubrie, 47, of Clay Center, swerved right and struck both the parked Nissan and Worthen. The Civic came to rest in the east ditch.

Worthen suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Her passenger, Mary J. Miles, 74, of Abilene, was not hurt. Macoubrie was taken to Memorial Health System with suspected minor injuries. Both Macoubrie and Miles were wearing seat belts, according to the crash report.
Neighbors described Worthen as a familiar face in the community, someone who kept to her routines and lived a quiet life. The simple act of retrieving mail turned tragic in a matter of seconds, leaving family and friends stunned.
The crash highlights the risks of rural roads where mailboxes sit close to traffic lanes. Residents often step into the roadway to collect mail, a routine that can quickly become dangerous when visibility is low or drivers are distracted.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances, but early findings point to the Civic’s swerve as the critical moment. Why the driver veered remains under investigation. For now, the community is left with grief and questions.
Worthen’s death leaves a hole in Solomon, a town where neighbors know each other by name. Her passing is a reminder of how fragile everyday moments can be when cars and people share narrow rural roads.
