Nevaeh Angel Hurdley was just 20 years old when her life ended on a Sunday afternoon. She was behind the wheel of a 2001 Toyota on US-421 southbound in Winston-Salem. Her friend Brianna Dawn McCall, 22, sat with her. Neither made it home.
The crash hit just before the Silas Creek Parkway exit. Police say the car was going fast. Hurdley lost control. The Toyota smashed into the median guardrail. It shot off to the right, hit another guardrail and some trees, then rolled over hard.

Both women were thrown from the car. So was the third person inside. Emergency crews got there quick, but Hurdley and McCall were already gone. They died right there on the side of the road.
Jared Wayne McCall, 24, got thrown out too. He went to a local hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening. That is the word from Winston-Salem police.
None of the three had seatbelts on. That detail came out early in the check by the traffic unit. The car was an older Toyota, and speed played a big part according to the first look at the scene.
Investigators are still piecing together what happened right before the car spun out. They want to know more about the moments leading up to the loss of control. The traffic unit has the case now.
Anyone who saw the crash or knows something can call Winston-Salem police at 336-773-7700. The probe is not done yet. Two young women are gone, and their families are left with the sudden hole that opened up on that stretch of road.
