The call came in just before 7:30 a.m. on October 14. Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers headed to Interstate 59 in Pearl River County. A 2016 Kia Sedona had gone off the road and hit a tree.

Barbara Haralson of Picayune was driving. She was 77. Riding with her was Kelton Haralson, 36, also from Picayune. The van was going north when it left the pavement.

Both were hurt in the impact. Ambulances took them to a hospital nearby. Barbara died from her injuries. Kelton stayed under care. Officials have not released more on his condition.

Troopers say the crash is still under investigation. They are checking the scene and the vehicle. No other cars were involved from what has been shared so far.

Mornings on that stretch of highway usually pass without much trouble. People commute or run early trips. This time the van ended up against a tree instead.

Picayune is not far from the spot. News of the wreck reached town quick. A woman who had lived there for years was gone. The passenger survived the same crash.

Highway Patrol will keep working the case. They will put out more when they have it. Until then the facts stay simple. A van left the road. One person died. Another was hurt. That is what happened on I-59 that Wednesday.
