A car hit five-year-old Ka’una Reed on a Raytown street Tuesday night and then left. The spot was East 87th Street near James A. Reed around 9 p.m. The driver has not been named or caught.

Ka’una was walking in the roadway. The vehicle struck her and drove away. Family stood nearby and watched it unfold. She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

Troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol took over the investigation. Raytown police answered the first call. No one has matched the car to a person yet.

Witness stories about the vehicle do not all match. That makes the search harder. Patrol officers want any dashcam clips or security video from the area that evening.

The phone number for tips is 816-622-0800 at Troop A headquarters. Even a partial plate or color could move the case forward.

Ka’una’s aunt set up a fundraiser for the funeral. Donations are coming in to help the family with those bills. They are left with memories of a short life cut off without warning.

Police keep looking for the person behind the wheel. The stretch of road near the park stays quiet now, but the questions from that night remain open.
