John Ray Corkren was 80 years old and lived right there in Bessemer. Tuesday morning around 8:20 he was driving on Morgan Road when his vehicle hit another one head-on in the 2500 block.
Police got the call and showed up quick. Medics checked him at the scene. He was pronounced dead at 8:38 a.m.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later put a name to the driver who did not make it. Corkren was alone in his vehicle.
The other driver got hurt and went to UAB Hospital. No word yet on how bad those injuries are.
Bessemer police are still looking into exactly what caused the crash. They have not released more details on the vehicles or the road conditions that morning.
Folks who knew Corkren say he had lived in the area a long time. Eighty years is a full stretch of life, filled with the usual ups and downs that mark any long road.
The investigation continues. For now the facts stay simple. One man left home that morning and did not come back.
