A normal Monday afternoon on State Highway 180 near Sequin Road in the Town of Porterfield changed fast. Brian Thoreson, 42, from Crivitz rode his Harley-Davidson northbound when the vehicles ahead started to slow.
Dorothy Kowalski, 66, of Marinette was in the car just in front. She eased off the gas for a vehicle that planned to turn left onto Sequin Road. Brian’s motorcycle struck the rear of her vehicle.

He had no helmet on. The impact caused injuries that ended his life right there. Kowalski walked away without injury.
Marinette County dispatch heard about the crash at 4:40 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and began sorting out the facts with the medical examiner’s office. Local firefighters and EMS crews from Aurora Medical Center – Bay Area worked the scene too.
Traffic backed up until crews cleared the highway around 6:20 p.m. Everything took place in the northbound lane.
The sudden stop of one vehicle and the failure to react in time by the motorcycle rider created a moment no one expected. People who knew Brian in Crivitz now deal with the news.
The investigation continues. Deputies have not released a final report.
