Suffolk County police detectives launched an investigation after a local business owner lost his life in a motorcycle crash Monday.

The crash occurred along the southbound lanes of William Floyd Parkway near Ridgewood Drive in the hamlet of Shirley.

Investigators reported that 55-year-old Robert Haufler was operating a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle when he lost control shortly after 1:00 p.m.

The bike slammed directly into the driver’s side of a stationary 2016 Jeep, ejecting Haufler from the motorcycle.

First responders treated the injured rider on the parkway before an ambulance transported him to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk.

Hospital staff pronounced the 55-year-old dead a short time after he arrived at the Patchogue facility.

Haufler was a well-known local executive who spent decades working in sales and real estate financing across the region.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad have impounded the motorcycle to perform a thorough mechanical safety check.

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to call detectives at 631-852-8752.
