Matthew Dale Barton never made it home early Monday. The 21-year-old from Greenville was behind the wheel of his four-door Ford SUV when it crashed near the intersection of Pelzer Highway and Tinsley Drive in Easley.
It was about 1:47 a.m. on October 12. Just one vehicle involved. Emergency crews got him to Prisma Health Baptist Easley Hospital. He did not survive his injuries.

Officials said he was not wearing a seat belt. That detail sticks with you. A simple strap that might have changed everything.
Matthew was only 21. Most folks that age are still figuring out work, friends, maybe a place of their own. His future stopped right there on that stretch of road in Pickens County.
South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Pickens County Coroner’s Office are looking into what happened. No other cars. No other drivers. Just Matthew and the dark early morning.
People who knew him will carry the empty space he left. Family. Friends. The quiet that hits when someone young is gone.
His name is Matthew Dale Barton. He lived in Greenville. He died in Easley. And that is the hard truth of it.
