Kirk spent years steering the Indigo Girls across the country. Early Friday morning, that road ended on Interstate 20.
Around 6 a.m. on October 9, the motor coach he drove slammed into a disabled tractor-trailer in Richland County. No one else from the band or crew sat on the bus. Kirk died in the crash.

The cause stays under investigation. Local reports from WLTX first put the time and place out there. Details on how the tractor-trailer sat disabled have not come out yet.
The Indigo Girls put out a statement the same day. They called Kirk an integral part of life on the road. He shepherded them safely across thousands of miles through every season and all kinds of weather. He was a joyful constant. They said they will miss him dearly.
Out of respect for Kirk and the grief that hit hard, the band canceled the Saturday night show at the Carolina Opry Theater in Myrtle Beach. They are still sorting out the next dates in Wilmington, North Carolina; Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; and Sugar Land, Texas.
Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have toured together for decades. Hits like “Closer to Fine” and “Galileo” filled those nights. Drivers like Kirk kept the whole operation moving from city to city.
Richland County sits in the middle of South Carolina and takes in Columbia. I-20 runs east-west right through there. The tour will pick back up when the band is ready. For now they asked fans to send a prayer or some love Kirk’s way.
