The other man told investigators he saw Gilreath pull a handgun from his waistband and shoot Slinkard in the head. Gilreath then turned and walked away east on West 13th Street.

Officers found Slinkard near the apartment door with the gunshot wound. He was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:49 p.m.

Police located Gilreath at about 8:23 p.m. They took him into custody without trouble. Witnesses said Gilreath believed Slinkard was involved with Gilreath’s ex-girlfriend.

A search along the route Gilreath took turned up a 9 mm handgun in a holster near a park bench in the 1300 block of West 13th Street. Officers seized it as the suspected weapon.

After talking with Gilreath and others, police took him to the hospital for a medical evaluation. He was then booked into the Monroe County Jail on a murder charge.
