Landon Rockwell, 19, of Dedham, was thrown from his pickup in a violent crash that killed his passenger, Paul Meservey, 23, of Orrington, early Thursday in Ellsworth, Maine. Police say Rockwell’s GMC Sierra 1500 left Bucksport Road near Surry Road around 1:28 a.m., striking two homes before coming to rest.

The truck’s path across Main Street was devastating. It hit one residence, then slammed into another, leaving behind wreckage and shaken homeowners. Rockwell was ejected during the crash, a sign of the sheer force involved. He was taken first to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital, then flown by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Meservey, seated inside the truck, did not survive. His death has left family and friends reeling, especially after learning he had posted on Facebook only hours before the accident. That detail has made the loss feel even more immediate.

Police and fire crews responded quickly, joined by Northern Light ambulance and Bangor Police. The Hancock County District Attorney’s Office was informed as investigators began reconstructing the crash.

Authorities are working to understand what caused Rockwell to lose control. The pickup’s violent trajectory suggests speed and road conditions may be factors, but the investigation is not yet complete.

The damage to the two homes underscores how close the crash came to causing even more tragedy. Residents escaped injury, but the sight of a truck smashing into their houses in the middle of the night will not be forgotten.

Ellsworth, a Hancock County city near the Downeast coast, is now marked by the loss of a young man and the survival of another who faces serious injuries and questions about what led to the deadly crash.
