Quincy English, 44, of Fort Wayne, was taken into custody after police say he struck and killed a pedestrian with a borrowed motorcycle late Sunday night in downtown Fort Wayne. The crash happened on Lafayette Street near Wayne Street, right in the heart of the city. Investigators say English kept riding after the collision, leaving the victim behind as first responders rushed to save his life.

Officers were called around 7:50 p.m. to the busy intersection. They found an adult male pedestrian with severe injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital but did not survive. As of Monday, the Allen County Coroner had not yet released the victim’s name. Surveillance footage later confirmed the motorcycle heading northbound before hitting the man as he crossed the street.

Police identified English as the rider and booked him into the Allen County Jail. He now faces preliminary charges including leaving the scene of an accident causing death, criminal recklessness, and obstruction of justice. Court records show the motorcycle wasn’t his. Investigators tracked down the registered owner, who admitted he had loaned the bike to English earlier that day.

The case took a strange turn when the owner and his wife received text messages from English about two hours after the crash. According to court documents, English told them to report the motorcycle stolen. Detectives later found him at his girlfriend’s home and brought him in for questioning. He admitted he had looked away while trying to change lanes and realized too late that he had hit the pedestrian.

English told police he parked the motorcycle nearby and walked back toward the crash scene, where he saw medics performing CPR. Instead of speaking with officers, he left and went home. Investigators later recovered the damaged motorcycle near South Lafayette Street and East Berry Street. The damage matched the collision.

The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team led the investigation, with help from the Street Crimes Unit. Surveillance footage and physical evidence tied English to the crash. He is scheduled to appear before a judge Wednesday. The charges remain preliminary, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Fort Wayne, the second-largest city in Indiana, sits near the Ohio border. The deadly crash unfolded in its downtown core, just blocks from Lafayette and Wayne streets, leaving residents shaken by the sudden loss of life in such a public space.
