The chaos in Atlanta Monday evening reads like a scene out of a movie. Police say Phelan Thorpe, already wanted for a violent attack on a woman near a Midtown MARTA station, threatened to shoot officers before stealing a patrol car and crashing it beneath a tanker truck on I-675. Newly filed warrants lay out the tense moments that unfolded.
Officers tracked Thorpe to a home on Thomasville Drive SE around 5:17 p.m. They spotted him walking around the property. When they approached, Thorpe grew hostile. He yelled, flexed his body, and took a fighting stance. He told officers he would fight back and demanded they leave him alone. Then came the chilling threat—he said he would shoot them.
Police pulled back and called for backup. In that brief pause, Thorpe sprinted toward a marked patrol car, jumped inside, and sped off. Officers scrambled to follow, but he slipped away. The chase quickly spread beyond Atlanta into Clayton County.
Thorpe was spotted on the expressway, driving recklessly. The pursuit ended violently near Forest Park. Warrants say he drove the wrong way on a ramp toward I-675 southbound, left the roadway, and slammed into another vehicle. The stolen patrol car ended up wedged beneath a tanker. Despite the wreck, Thorpe climbed out and tried to run.
An APD sergeant caught him before he could get far. Thorpe now faces charges of hijacking a motor vehicle, terroristic threats, obstruction, theft, and driving without a license. He also faces charges tied to the earlier Midtown attack, where a woman reported being knocked down, hit, and robbed of her purse.
The warrants paint a picture of a man spiraling out of control, escalating from threats to outright theft and a dangerous chase. Officers say the confrontation could have ended far worse. The crash left the patrol car mangled, but Thorpe walked away with his freedom cut short.
Investigators say surveillance footage tied him to the Midtown attack. That case began Saturday when the woman was assaulted near Peachtree Place and West Peachtree Street. Police believe Thorpe’s violent spree stretched from downtown Atlanta to the interstate, ending only when he was pulled from the wreckage.
Thorpe’s arrest closes one chapter, but the charges ahead are serious. His actions put officers, drivers, and bystanders at risk. The warrants reveal not just a crime, but a chain of reckless choices that nearly cost lives.
