Another death inside the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. This time it’s 37-year-old Brandon Joe McCoy. He was found unresponsive in his cell around 12:28 a.m. Friday. Deputies tried to save him. EMS tried to save him. It wasn’t enough. Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley pronounced him dead at the facility.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now on the case. That’s what happens when someone dies in custody in Georgia. The GBI will conduct an autopsy. They’ll look at the body. They’ll look at the circumstances. They’ll try to figure out what killed a man who was locked up in Macon.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating. Internal Affairs is involved. The Office of Professional Standards is reviewing everything. They want to know what happened before McCoy was found. Was he checked on? When? By who? Did he show signs of distress earlier? Did anyone notice? These are the questions that matter now.

McCoy was 37. He had a name. He had people who cared about him. Now those people are stuck waiting. Waiting on the autopsy. Waiting on the GBI. Waiting on Internal Affairs. Waiting on somebody to tell them something real. That’s the hardest part of a death like this. The not knowing. The silence. The official statements that say nothing.

The Sheriff’s Office hasn’t released details about why McCoy was in custody or how long he’d been there. That information might come later. For now, the focus is on the investigation. The autopsy will be key. It’ll show cause of death. It might show contributing factors. It might raise more questions than it answers.

Deaths in custody always bring scrutiny. They bring questions about conditions, about supervision, about whether everything was done right. The Bibb County Law Enforcement Center is no stranger to that scrutiny. Now it’s facing it again. And a family in Macon is facing a future without Brandon Joe McCoy.

More information will be released after the autopsy and the internal review. Until then, the investigation continues. The questions pile up. And the people who knew McCoy are left to remember him the best way they can.
