Vivian Savella was only four years old when her life ended in a west Houston home Tuesday evening. Police say the little girl was shot by her mother just hours after a custody hearing placed Vivian in her father’s care. The tragedy unfolded inside a quiet neighborhood on Terra Reserve Place, leaving a family shattered and a community stunned.

Officers arrived around 5:45 p.m. after reports of gunfire. They found Vivian dead from a gunshot wound. Her mother, a 30-year-old woman whose name has not been released, was also shot. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and is expected to survive. Investigators believe she shot her daughter before turning the gun on herself.

Earlier that day, a judge had ruled Vivian would live primarily with her father, Aaron. The family’s attorney said Aaron had followed every legal step to protect his daughter. “He trusted the courts. He followed every order. He waited for the process to work,” the family said in a statement. Vivian was supposed to return to her father’s home that evening. She never did.

Inside the house at the time were Vivian’s stepfather and a babysitter. They told police they heard gunshots upstairs. When they rushed up, they found Vivian and her mother. The stepfather tried to help Vivian before emergency crews arrived, but it was too late.

Police are still piecing together what happened inside the home after the custody hearing. Homicide detectives are examining the sequence of events, but no further details have been released. The mother remains hospitalized under police watch.

Vivian’s family described her as deeply loved. They said her father and relatives are devastated and asked for privacy as they grieve. The statement painted a picture of a father who had done everything right, only to lose his daughter in the most heartbreaking way.

The shooting happened in Houston’s Memorial area, part of Harris County. Terra Reserve Place sits near North Kirkwood Road, a suburban stretch now marked by tragedy. Neighbors say the sound of sirens that evening was the first sign something terrible had happened. For Aaron, it was the moment his world collapsed.
