BOB HARPER NEW YORK: Fitness Star Survived a Near-Fatal Heart Attack That Changed His Life

Reports claiming that fitness trainer and television personality Bob Harper has died after a long battle with heart problems do not match the available record. Harper suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 2017, but later public appearances and interviews show that he continued his work in television, fitness and health. His experience, however, changed the way he viewed his body, his workouts and his health.

Harper, best known for his work on “The Biggest Loser,” had built his career around exercise and physical strength. For years, he was seen as someone who represented peak fitness. That image was shaken on Feb. 12, 2017, when Harper suddenly collapsed while working out at a gym in New York City.

Harper later explained that he went into cardiac arrest during the workout. His heart stopped, and he was unconscious for a period of time. Two doctors who happened to be at the gym helped give him emergency care, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Emergency crews continued treating him after they arrived, and Harper spent more than a week in the hospital.

The incident was especially striking because Harper was only 51 and appeared to be in excellent physical shape. His experience showed that a person can exercise regularly and still face serious heart problems. Harper later learned that he had familial hypercholesterolemia, a hereditary condition that can cause high levels of LDL cholesterol and raise the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The heart attack also affected Harper in ways that were not visible. Recovery became an emotional battle as much as a physical one. He had spent much of his life pushing his body hard, so learning to trust his heart again was difficult. For a long time, he became cautious about exercise and mainly focused on yoga because he was afraid of pushing himself too far.

Harper also changed the way he thought about food and health. His earlier career had been closely tied to intense workouts and strict approaches to eating. After the heart attack, he adopted a more balanced approach and paid greater attention to factors such as cholesterol, family history and overall heart health. His experience became a major part of the message he shared with others.

Years later, Harper was still talking openly about what happened. In 2025, his appearance on “The Traitors” brought that part of his story back into the spotlight. One physically demanding challenge forced him to confront how much his confidence in his body had changed since the heart attack. After struggling during the task, Harper said the experience helped him begin trusting his heart again and return to more challenging forms of exercise.

Harper has continued appearing in television projects and speaking publicly about fitness and heart health. His story is not one of a fitness star dying from heart disease, but of a man who survived a major cardiac emergency and had to rebuild his confidence afterward. The 2017 heart attack remains one of the defining moments of his life, but his public record shows that he continued living and working years after it happened.
