A routine traffic stop on Interstate 65 ended in tragedy Monday afternoon, taking the life of Kentucky State Trooper Hayden Phillips. Phillips was 30 years old and had served on the force for three years. He leaves behind his wife and three young sons.

Trooper Phillips pulled a car over around 2 p.m. in Warren County near Bowling Green. Shortly after he walked up to the vehicle, someone inside opened fire. Phillips was hit and died from his injuries at the scene.

Phillips was a graduate of Cadet Class 103 and was assigned to Kentucky State Police Post 3 in Bowling Green. Fellow officers knew him as a dedicated lawman who worked hard every day to keep local highways safe.

Word of his death spread quickly through the department and local community, leaving coworkers and family members grieving. Those who worked alongside him remembered a man who always put his family first and took pride in wearing the badge.

The shooting immediately sparked a massive search across central Kentucky. Officers from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies banded together to locate the suspect, who sped away right after the shots were fired.

Authorities eventually tracked down 51-year-old Emonnie Branch of Portland, Tennessee, in Jefferson County. Officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department arrested Branch later that afternoon without further incident.

Branch is being transported back to Warren County to face murder charges. Meanwhile, community members in Bowling Green are gathering support for Phillips’ wife and three boys as they deal with the painful loss.
