A 21-year-old South Dakota man is recovering from life-threatening injuries after a fatal overnight crash in rural Clay County that left his passenger dead. Vicktor Robinson, of Sisseton, South Dakota, was behind the wheel early Friday morning when his car drifted off the road and hit a power pole in the 10000 block of 90th Avenue North.

The wreck happened around 1:41 a.m. in an open farm area north of Glyndon. There were no other drivers on the dark country road when the car left the lane and struck the utility pole.

Emergency services got the call because of automated crash detection on a cell phone inside the vehicle. The phone detected the heavy impact and automatically called Clay County dispatchers, giving first responders exact coordinates so they could send help immediately.

When deputies and paramedics reached the scene, they found 19-year-old Lindsey Rabon, of Fosston, Minnesota, inside the destroyed vehicle. Medical personnel tried to treat her, but she died from her injuries at the site of the crash.

Robinson had severe injuries from the impact. First responders worked to stabilize him on the road before putting him in an ambulance to a regional hospital, where he remains under medical care.

Deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office immediately started checking the scene to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the lane. Initial findings from law enforcement suggest that excessive speed and alcohol were both contributing factors in the crash.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting local deputies with crash reconstruction and analyzing physical evidence from the road. Once all reports and lab tests are completed, the Sheriff’s Office will hand the case over to the Clay County Attorney’s Office to decide on formal criminal charges against Robinson.

While Robinson faces a long recovery and potential legal consequences, the collision has turned into a fatal lesson about late-night driving. One night on a quiet road ended with a young life lost and serious charges on the horizon.
