State troopers in Anderson County are digging into a fatal late-night crash that claimed the life of a 26-year-old motorcyclist over the weekend. The victim, identified as Jacob Chase Scroggins of Belton, died on impact after his bike crashed on River Road.

The crash went down around 10:10 p.m. Saturday near Tall Oaks Circle, a quiet stretch of roadway in Piedmont. Officers say Scroggins was riding his Honda motorcycle when the vehicle suddenly veered off course.

According to initial findings from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the motorcycle crossed over the left side of the road without warning. The bike slammed directly into a tree along the tree line, bringing a sudden end to the ride.

First responders were dispatched immediately to the crash site in the Upstate region. When medical personnel and deputies reached the scene, Scroggins was pronounced dead on site due to the force of the collision.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office officially took over the death investigation alongside state troopers. Coroner officials confirmed the young man’s identity and ruled the cause of death as accidental.

Investigators are now working to piece together what caused the Honda motorcycle to leave the paved lane. Weather conditions, road surface hazards, and potential mechanical issues are typically examined in cases like this, though troopers haven’t released any official cause yet.

The fatal wreck occurred in a rural pocket of Anderson County, roughly 30 miles southwest of Greenville and just outside Belton. Local residents know River Road well, making the sudden tragedy resonate deeply throughout the surrounding rural communities.

Both the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Anderson County Coroner’s Office confirm the case remains wide open. Further updates will be made public once crash reconstruction specialists finish analyzing the physical evidence from the site.
