A quiet Friday night in Onslow County turned into a nightmare when 20-year-old Nicholas Venth lost his life in a violent single-car crash on Drummer Kellum Road.

State troopers reported that the wreck took place around 11:30 p.m. right near the intersection of Jennifer Drive. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after getting calls about a car running off the road.

Investigators say Venth was driving at speeds well above the posted limit. Officers estimated the car was traveling between 80 and 90 miles per hour in a zone marked for 45 miles per hour.

The force of the crash ejected Venth from the vehicle. Paramedics worked on him at the site before loading him into an ambulance bound for the nearby Naval Hospital in Jacksonville.

Despite the best efforts of medical personnel at the hospital, Venth could not be saved. Doctors pronounced the 20-year-old dead shortly after his arrival at the emergency room.

News of the crash spread fast through the local area on Saturday morning. Friends and family members spent the day reaching out to one another, struggling to process how quickly everything changed.

At just 20 years old, Venth had his whole life ahead of him. Neighbors described a young man who was well-liked, leaving behind a family now facing an unimaginable loss.

Law enforcement officers are still wrapping up their investigation into the exact circumstances leading up to the vehicle leaving the pavement. For now, a dark stretch of Drummer Kellum Road stands as a silent reminder of how fast a life can be cut short.
