Illinois State Police shut down a major stretch of Interstate 270 in Glen Carbon following a deadly four-vehicle wreck early Thursday morning.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. along the westbound side of I-270, east of the exit for Illinois Route 157.
Emergency vehicles blocked all westbound lanes as officers and fire crews worked to clear flipped metal and debris from the highway.
One person died in the collision, prompting state troopers to launch an active fatal crash investigation.
Traffic officials immediately set up a detour, rerouting all westbound drivers off I-270 and onto Illinois Route 159.
Tow trucks arrived to remove the four damaged vehicles, including one car that flipped onto its side during the wreck.
State police have not announced when the highway will fully reopen as reconstruction teams finish gathering physical evidence.
