State troopers are continuing their investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a Stuart resident Wednesday night. The collision occurred around 6:25 p.m. when a westbound 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee hit 49-year-old Michelle Dawn Sellers as she walked on Morgan Ford Road.

Emergency crews responded to the 300 block of Morgan Ford Road, close to Old Leaksville Road in Henry County. Members of the Ridgeway District Volunteer Fire Department arrived alongside county public safety medics, but Sellers was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police confirmed that the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee stopped immediately after the crash. Officials have kept the driver’s identity private and have not disclosed whether the driver sustained any injuries in the collision.

Troopers announced that no criminal charges are pending against the driver at this stage of the investigation. The decision has drawn local attention as residents look for clarity on how the collision happened along the narrow two-lane road.

The Virginia Department of Transportation closed off the section of Morgan Ford Road for several hours Wednesday evening. Crash reconstruction officers surveyed the scene, marking tire marks and examining the front end of the Jeep for physical evidence.

The area where the crash took place is located in southern Virginia near the Martinsville region and the North Carolina border. The rural road has minimal street lighting, making visibility a major focus of the active inquiry.

State police have not stated whether speed or weather played a role in the accident. Investigators are working through the evidence gathered at the site and expect to release updates as the case proceeds.
