A violent pre-dawn collision left two people dead and plunged thousands of local residents into darkness early Thursday morning.
Davie Fire Rescue units were dispatched at approximately 4:45 a.m. following a crash involving two vehicles along Nova Drive. The impact knocked out electric service across the surrounding area when one vehicle struck a main power pole and burst into flames.
Florida Power & Light reported that more than 2,000 customers lost electricity immediately after the utility pole caught fire.
Emergency crews shut down Nova Drive in both directions between College Avenue and Davie Road to secure the scene for investigators.
Utility workers arrived on the scene shortly after the crash to repair damaged power lines and restore working traffic signals nearby.
Police eventually reopened the westbound lanes of Nova Drive while traffic homicide detectives continue investigating what caused the fatal collision.
