A late-night drive along U.S. Highway 98 turned deadly in Lamar County when an SUV drifted off the asphalt and overturned, claiming the life of a 32-year-old local driver and sending her passenger to the hospital in critical condition.
State troopers and county emergency crews responded to the crash scene shortly after 11:00 p.m. on September 22. According to initial findings from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the victim, identified as Skylar Pickering Smith of Purvis, was driving west near a local stretch of the highway when her vehicle suddenly veered off course.

Investigators reported that Smith’s 2008 Jeep Cherokee left the right side of the roadway for unknown reasons. The vehicle struck a concrete driveway embankment at high speed, sending the midsize SUV airborne before it flipped onto its roof along the shoulder.
Lamar County first responders arrived at the scene within minutes of the initial 911 calls. Despite efforts by paramedics, Smith sustained severe traumatic injuries from the force of the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lamar County Coroner’s Office.
Riding in the front passenger seat was 29-year-old Jessica Delgado of Sumrall. Emergency personnel managed to extricate Delgado from the crumpled vehicle before rushing her by ambulance to a nearby trauma center, where she remains in critical condition.
Local police and state troopers closed off the westbound lanes of Highway 98 for several hours overnight while crash reconstruction experts examined the scene, mapped tire marks, and cleared heavy debris from the roadway.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate what caused the Jeep to leave the highway. Authorities have not yet determined whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or other factors contributed to the fatal crash.
