Early Thursday morning on South Dakota Highway 46, an 83-year-old Nebraska driver topped a rural hill and ran directly into a piece of heavy farm machinery crossing a narrow county-line bridge. Loy G. Nelson, a resident of Maskell, Nebraska, died from injuries sustained in the crash around 6:40 a.m. on September 17, 2026.
The collision happened roughly nine miles east of Wagner, right on the border where Charles Mix County meets Bon Homme County. Nelson was heading eastbound behind the wheel of his 2015 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 pickup truck. At the exact same time, a westbound John Deere tractor was hauling a heavy grain drill across the bridge structure at mile marker 298.

The tractor driver, 58-year-old Melvin Lee Cap of Scotland, South Dakota, was steering a 2010 John Deere 7410 model. As Cap crossed the bridge with the wide planting equipment in tow, Nelson’s pickup came over the crest of the hill just feet away.
Seeing the Silverado come over the rise, Cap yanked the steering wheel toward the north ditch to clear the lane. But the shoulder was too narrow and the distance too short. The Chevrolet slammed into the farm rig before either vehicle could come to a full stop.
State troopers confirmed Nelson was buckled up at the time of the impact. Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Highway 46, but the force of the wreck left the elderly Nebraska driver with fatal injuries. Cap escaped the collision without any physical injuries, despite not wearing a seat belt in the tractor cab.
The stretch of Highway 46 where the crash occurred sits amidst rolling farmland east of Wagner. Bridges and hill crests in the area leave drivers with minimal sight lines, particularly during early morning hours when sun glare and agricultural traffic overlap.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol took charge of the scene and continues to investigate the exact dynamics of the crash. State authorities noted that all details released remain preliminary as crash reconstruction teams process physical evidence from the pickup and the tractor.
Funeral services for Nelson are scheduled for Wednesday morning at Faith Lutheran Church in his hometown of Maskell. For the small community of around 30 people in Cedar County, Nebraska, the sudden news of the local senior’s death on a South Dakota highway has left a deep impact.
