A quiet weekend drive turned tragic early Saturday morning on a dark stretch of Interstate 85. Jason Nye, 31, his 32-year-old wife Christina, and their 6-year-old daughter lost their lives in a sudden crash near the Durham County line.

The Charlotte family was traveling northbound in a Toyota Highlander around 4 a.m. Traffic up ahead had already slowed down due to a separate wreck that happened earlier in the morning.

Emergency crews had positioned vehicles along the road to direct drivers away from the danger. A Providence Fire Department truck was parked across the lanes to shield first responders working at the scene.

State troopers said the Highlander came up fast on the stopped vehicles. The SUV failed to slow down in time and slammed right into the back of the fire truck.

All three family members inside the SUV died at the scene from the force of the collision. Responders cleared the wreckage as highway patrol officers launched an official investigation into the crash.

Friends and neighbors back in Charlotte are struggling with the sudden loss. Those who knew the family described them as close-knit and devoted to raising their young daughter.

Troopers are still reviewing what caused the driver to miss the parked fire truck. The highway remained shut down for hours as investigators documented the scene.
